► February 8 - 6:30 PM Cave Creek: The Age of the Universe. Begins by looking at the concepts of distance and time from the evolutionary and biblical points of view. Then the expansion of the universe is examined from both physical evidence and Scripture, as is the pivotal issue of whether or not the universe has a center and an edge. The implications of this are discussed along with the issue of the beginning of matter and energy. The real Big Bang in the future concludes this presentation. 

► February 15 - 6:30 PM Cave Creek: Five Questions for Collegians. Christian students in college typically experience an environment where certain preconceptions rule supreme. Dr. Kezele, himself a biology professor at Arizona Christian University, engages these myths and peels them back by posing five essential questions: (1) Are Dinosaurs Recent or Prehistoric? (2) Are Ape-men for Real? (3) Did Fossils Result From a World-Wide Flood? (4) Why Did Natural Selection and Speciation Occur? (5) Does DNA Contain Information, or Merely Chemicals? If you are in -- or have ever attended -- college, then you'll benefit from this compact presentation. 

► February 19 (Sunday) - 8:00, 9:30 & 11:00 AM Tempe: Believing the Bible in a Scientific Age. Fill the church with your presence as Russ MIller, widely renowned creation science speaker, reignites the excitement of knowing that scientific facts dovetail with Bible truth. For some in the audience, these insights will be new, maybe controversial, and certainly thought provoking. Your presence will add witness-power. 

► February 20 - 7:00 PM Phoenix: If the Foundations Be Destroyed. Russ Miller stirs Christian and American hearts and minds by reminding them the USA was founded by predominantly Christian men and women on predominantly Christian principles. Revealing that Biblical creation underlies both the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the freedoms that Americans enjoy, he also shows that our Christian heritage is being erased. ► February 22 - 6:30 PM Cave Creek: Five Impossible Questions for Evolutionists. Never again lack confidence in our scientific challenges to Darwin's prevailing 19th Century dogma. Dr. Kezele provides five powerful questions and shows how they upset the comfortable secular materialist apple cart: Where did matter and energy come from? Wher did the first living cell come from? Were did the Cambrian explosion come from? Where did dinosaurs come from? Where did information come from? Just when they thought they had all the answers and said God was dead ... !  

► February 29 - 6:30 PM Cave Creek: America, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. Surviving this political season means taking a dose of history, a measure of philosophy, and view into future trends. To place America into its dynamic context, Dr. Kezele reviews American military history and the founding principles of our government, which have led into our present condition and the spiritual battle we now face for America's future. These ideas will spur stimulating conversations (and maybe some action) for the rest of the year!

Previous announcements might have suggested we need a field marshal, but actually we just need a willing supply sergeant. For our book selling operation, we're looking for a person -- not to run all of the stores -- but just to help maintain the stock for the stores. AzOSA can thrive only by delivering the materials people need to make the scientific case for Creation. You can directly contribute to everyone's success. Skills needed include the ability to learn how to use the new online database, along with a working knowledge of Word and Excel (or similar office programs). Original AzOSA Research Gets National Scholarly Audience

AzOSA’s Church Survey examined the commitment of Arizona churches to the literal 6-day creation, a young Earth, and other Biblical and creation science views. In June 2011, AzOSA Board Member Larry S. Kisner presented some of the Survey’s results to scholars convened at the Inaugural Faith & Science Conference in Springfield, Missouri. Larry’s presentation, entitled “Survey and Analysis of Pentecostal Biblical Creation Worldviews,” was published in the Proceedings of that conference, in “Section 3” of the collection of papers. (1) God Saw That the Light Was Good. Based on recent peer-reviewed publications, this presentation illuminates the fascinating facts about firefly tissues that emit light.  Mark Armitage, the presenter, also showcases the Scanning and Transmission electron microscope work performed at his microscope laboratory that reveals amazing structures of the tiniest biological entities.

Garden Grove, CA: Who Were the Apemen? – On Saturday, July 2, 2011, Dr. Kezele shakes the evolutionary tree to see whether humans descended from simians (apes, monkeys, bonobos). AzOSA Board Member Delivers Research
Findings At Evangel University    

AzOSA Board member Larry Kisner will present a paper at the Faith & Science Conference, June 27-28, 2011, at Evangel University in Springfield, MO. The paper will discuss creation views espoused by Pentecostal churches based on selected data collected by AzOSA from approximately 60 churches as part of a larger original research study. Over a period of about two years, 2,000 churches were contacted and 400 churches responded to a questionnaire requesting the church’s views about the literal Genesis account of creation and about doctrines of sin and salvation. Larry’s paper reports the tallied responses and analysis for the Pentecostal churches involved. If arrangements can be made, Larry’s paper will be available for interested AzOSA members and others after the presentation date. Congratulations to Larry Kisner for the huge effort that may well influence churches’ doctrines nationwide!

It’s Official: The Cochise Division Is Formed – May 2011 Presentation Is Scheduled

Under the leadership of Otto Richter, AzOSA Vice President, a Cochise Division now exists to serve southeast Arizonans interested in meeting like-minded people and learning more about origin science at a convenient location. On May 21, 2011, Dr. Kezele will deliver three talks in Sierra Vista at the Village Meadows Baptist Church at 9:00 a.m.

South Mountain Hike with AzOSA –
The Only Way to Spend a Winter Day!

Thirty-five hikers of all ages joined AzOSA on February 4 for a great hike on South Mountain. Led by AzOSA’s resident geologist, Jim Clarke, explorers saw mysterious petroglyphs, crawled through rock tunnels and natural bridges, and squeezed through “Fat Man's Pass.” The weather was perfect! Message to Eager Students In Sonora

Something about dinosaurs and fossils captivates school kids, and AzOSA experts excited the classroom at Casa de Timoteo orphanage last December 18 with an unforgettable show. Visiting the kids in the small town of Imuris, Sonora, 45 miles south of Nogales Dr. Joseph Kezele (AzOSA President), Patty Kezele, Jim Clarke (AzOSA Resident Geologist) and Terri Clarke intrigued their young audience with origin science and Bible truths.  
Dr. Kezele and Jim Clarke presented and shared the truth of God's word and the evidence for creation. Dr. Kezele gave an entire Power Point presentation in Spanish on creation and dinosaurs (los dinosaurios)! Jim Clarke brought some of his fossil collection and let the kids actually see and touch actual fossils. Eight copies of "The Lie" (en Español) were donated by an AzOSA member to the orphanage for its middle school program.

Can you spend a beautiful day leading Christian youngsters through the Tucson Zoo on February 22? The QUEST Science Club sponsors an annual science fair that welcomes projects including those featuring creation science perspectives. The 2011 fair takes place at the Tucson Zoo. One adult volunteer is needed to take students through the Zoo and discuss the animals in light of creation science understanding. November Board Meeting Highly Successful

The AzOSA Board Meeting that took place in November was very productive. Sharon Gannon was appointed to be the new AzOSA Treasurer. Work to develop the web site as a tracking device for sales and inventory control will significantly lessen the time put in by the Treasurer and Book Master. Nancy Porsche is doing a great job as Media Coordinator. A reimbursement policy for expenditures has been adopted. Vern Hartz, Pima Division Assistant Book Master has volunteered to also serve as V.P. of Sales. Monthly Meeting reminders will be sent out to Members and interested persons. Honorary membership for Tom Canfield was granted by the Board for his service in preparing and editing the DVDs AzOSA is producing. Dr. Mark Sinclair, Ph.D. in Meteorology, Professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott has joined AzOSA and the team of speakers. He has a marvelous presentation on Global Warming.

Eastern Europe Mission Trip Report

The Mission trip to Eastern Europe was successful way beyond expectations. The Lord opened many doors, and through the work of the local Christians and an American husband and wife team in Latvia, many people heard the Creation Evangelism messages and had their faith in Scripture strengthened. I was allowed to present messages in three universities, two medical schools, a prison for boys, several high schools, public and Christian, in a poly technical Institute and dozens of churches. Some 2,800 people heard the various presentations. It is interesting to note that the presentation most requested by Pastors was Six Days or Millions of Years. Compromise with the gap theory has been so widely taught in Russia and the countries that were part of the Russian Empire since 1882. Also in the churches many

people asked about dinosaurs, carbon-14, the age of the earth and the universe. These same topics were also most frequently asked about in the secular settings. In Latvia the radio interview, nearly an hour in length, had already been broadcast at least four times. Usually a program is only broadcast twice. Happy Creation Incident from Jim Clarke

I had an exciting experience today and I thought I'd share it with you. Terri and I were at the Grand Canyon this weekend just visiting and enjoying a weekend away from Phoenix. This morning we were preparing to return to Phoenix when we saw this group of Asian visitors standing on the rim behind Bright Angel Lodge. There was a gentleman apparently teaching about the formation of the Grand Canyon. He was speaking in an Asian language (turned out to be Korean) and I couldn't understand a word he was saying. However, he was drawing pictures on a whiteboard and it didn't appear to be the uniformitarian explanation. He was talking about the breached dam theory, cross bedding, and sapping. At one point in his lecture he pointed to heaven and I thought I heard him say creation. At that point I realized he was teaching the formation of the Grand Canyon from a young earth creationist perspective.

After he finished his talk, I went up and spoke to him. He told me he was a geologist and I told him I was one also. We then started talking about the formation of the Grand Canyon and he mentioned a recent conference that was focused on the formation of the Grand Canyon. He said that the conclusion was that the Grand Canyon formed catastrophically and not slowly over millions or billions of years. At that point I knew for sure that we were on the same side and I told him I was also a creationist geologist.

The gentleman's name is Jaeman Lee and he was leading a creation tour of Korean believers to the Grand Canyon. He attended ICR and knew several people that I know, including you Frank. We didn't discuss your use of one liners. He met Bill Hoesch a few months ago and has developed a friendship with him. He said that he's done about 30 trips to the Grand Canyon and that I was the first creationist geologist that he had met there. I gave him my card and we swapped information. I might be able to join him on a future trip because most 2nd generation Koreans don't speak Korean and he was looking for an English speaking geologist to help out.

In closing, even though I couldn't understand the language Jaeman was speaking, it was clear to me that he was teaching the truth of God's Word and that's why I stayed there and listened. Leave for Latvia September 12, arrive there the 13th by way of Newark, New Jersey and Frankfurt, Germany. Will teach there in several locations, including a prison for boys, a 7th Day Adventist church, Baptist churches, a high school, possibly in the seminary in Riga. This invitation is a result of last year's trip. Depart September 23 by air for Chernovtsy, the Ukraine. This also is an invitation as a result of teaching over the last several years. There will be presenting in several locations until October 5, when we travel to Moscow by train for 36 hours to meet up with the Americans flying into that city. Then train to Smolensk, in western Russia. Will serve there until October 17. They are working on getting me into the university, and other institutions. Home School Convention Photos

Microscope Lab August 28

Mark Armitage of Creation Research Society will conduct another Light and Electron Microscope Lab for AzOSA in Chino Valley at the Van Andel Creation Research Center on Saturday, August 28.  Enrollment is pegged at 15 participants, so sign up early. Taking Names for 2^nd Raft on Grand Canyon Trip July 10

Not everyone can go on a 3 or 7-day raft trip in the Grand Canyon, so here’s the next best thing - a ½ day raft trip starting at Glen Canyon Dam at Page, Arizona, and floating 15 scenic miles downstream to historic Lee’s Ferry. Mark Armitage of Creation Research Society will conduct another Light and Electron Microscope Lab for AzOSA in Chino Valley at the Van Andel Creation Research Center on Saturday, August 28. Enrollment is limited to 15 participants, however, only one person has signed up thus far. “SPLICE” Movie Review

Many years ago AzOSA had a presentation on how evolution was portrayed in Hollywood movies. Recently the movie 'Splice' depicts the laboratory creation of Dren, who is a composite of human and various types of animals. At first glance one would say 'this is not about evolution, as Dren is created'. But Dren was not the larva like creature suitable for producing biochemical cocktails the scientists expected. AzOSA Grand Canyon Bus Tour Needs YOU!

Church Survey Impact

Annual Membership Meeting Productive

On February 27, the members of AzOSA met and reelected the current Board and added Raymond Buettner III to the Board to represent the new Yavapai Division based in Prescott.  The current officers were re-elected and the list can be found HERE.  Further information will be forthcoming regarding the AzOSA exhibit at the State Home Schooling Convention, Youth/Youth Leader Seminar in the Phoenix area October 30^th, and the Yavapai Division Quarterly Seminars.  Several initiatives are being explored including a 1-day Creation Camp, and AzOSA Face Book page.

Deconstructing Darwin Conference in Tucson

Russ Humphreys, Ph.D. Physics, from Creation Ministries International and Kevin Anderson, Ph.D. Microbiology, from the Creation Research Society are the featured speakers at a Deconstructing Darwin Conference in Tucson on November 13 and 14.  This free-will offering event will be held at Fountain of Life Lutheran Church, located at 710 S. Fall Board Meeting Fruitful

August 29 the AzOSA Board of Directors met and had excellent discussions regarding policies and future projects. One of them is to establish an AzOSA Grant Fund, designed to channel financial assistance to Arizona based member ministries, such as research at the Van Andel Creation Research Center in Chino Valley. In this way multiple small gifts will be combined into a larger sum and directed to that effort, which is the fourth objective stated in our literature and on our web site. That is simply one example of several other worthy member ministries we look forward to assisting with funds. Should the Church Avoid the Controversy?

Many churches seem to avoid teaching about the topic of creation because it is too divisive. Some churches attempt to be “friends” with the world by teaching God used evolution. Some churches even claim to be neutral on the subject of creation, meaning they have not made up their mind what to believe. Therefore, should the church stick to teaching about Jesus and love and avoid controversial topics? The Bible provides a clear answer and warning for these churches. Churches and leaders who avoid teaching the tough or controversial biblical passages are being disobedient to God’s Word. First, the Bible teaches us that all Scripture is good for teaching.

2 Timothy 3:16: All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.

The first three chapters of Genesis provide the reason why the rest of the Bible had to be written. These three chapters are foundational to understanding the rest of Scripture. What we learn in Genesis 1-3 include:

• Our original relationship with God
• Why we have death (sin)
• Why we need a Savior
• Why God will make everything new

If we avoid these chapters or allegorize them we end up with a cut and paste theology. How can we explain the Gospel without a literal understanding of Genesis 1-3? How can we understand why we have death and suffering without a literal understanding of Genesis 1-3? How can we understand the character of God without a literal understanding of Genesis 1-3? Genesis 1-3 teaches us that God is all-powerful, only He can create out of nothing. He is a God of order. He is the sovereign (absolute) ruler of His creation. He has a special interest in mankind. He is a perfect God (Genesis 1:31). And He is a God of mercy and grace. Every house needs a good foundation to stand upon. Likewise, a key to understanding Scripture is to build on a solid foundation starting in the book of Genesis.

Second, the Bible teaches us that there is no such thing as neutrality when it comes to God’s Word. Matthew 12:30 makes this clear: He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.

When we maintain a position of neutrality with God’s Word, we blend in with the world. It then becomes difficult to tell the difference between these churches and the world. In other words, we have become “lukewarm” in our witness. The Bible teaches that we should study and never be ashamed of God’s Word.

2 Timothy 2:15: Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

We do not need more churches that want to be friends with the world. We need more churches that will stand on the truth of God’s Word and equip the world with the truth about Jesus Christ and His works from creation to the Cross and Salvation to His coming again to restore all things.

Youth and Youth Leader Creation Conference November 13-14

AzOSA Lasting Impact in Mexico

Last year Joseph Kezele, AzOSA President, along with youth and adults from Black Mountain Baptist Church in Cave Creek, participated in a mission trip to Escuinapa, Sinaloa at Bethel Baptist Church.  There he gave in Spanish the PowerPoint presentations: Are Dinosaurs More Recent Than You Think?, Fossils and the Flood, Where Did the Thousands of Languages Come From, and Why Won’t They Listen?  Answer in Genesis donated Spanish language books and DVDs for the church library.  Last week the following note was received from Melquiades Llanes, Pastor of Bethel Baptist Church:

Scientific American Quietly Disowns Ida "missing link" Fossil

To read an article about an extremely rare episode of the mainstream press turning against an evolutionary propaganda event, click HERE.  The author’s thoughts about the reason for this are very interesting.

A big stir was aroused in the media when the eminent British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking argues that God did not create the universe and the "Big Bang" was an inevitable consequence of the laws of physics in his new book "The Grand Design," co-authored with U.S. physicist Leonard Mlodinow. Hawking claims a new series of theories made a creator of the universe redundant, as he writes:

"Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist." "It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going."

Ironically, Hawking is the Cambridge University's Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, a position once held by Sir Isaac Newton, considered by many the greatest physicist of all time, and credited with the discovery of the Law of Gravity. Newton was also known to be a devout Christian and Bible student who wrote about the prophecies of Daniel. Stay tuned ... I will tell you more about Newton vs. Hawking and let you decide who is more believable.

Hawking's latest comments suggest he has become more skeptical of the existence of God. Previously, he wrote that the laws of physics meant it was simply not necessary to believe that God had intervened in the Big Bang, as quoted in his best selling 1988 book "A Brief History of Time." "If we discover a complete theory, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason -- for then we should know the mind of God."

Now in his latest book, Hawking said the 1992 discovery of a planet orbiting another star other than the Sun helped deconstruct the view of the father of physics Isaac Newton that the universe could not have arisen out of chaos but was created by God.

"That makes the coincidences of our planetary conditions -- the single Sun, the lucky combination of Earth-Sun distance and solar mass, far less remarkable, and far less compelling evidence that the Earth was carefully designed just to please us human beings," he writes.

Let me stress an important comment here about believability. The news you receive from the newspapers, TV, science journals, etc. are all biased toward believing what modern scientists tell us. They announce a discovery of a planet outside our solar system that is orbiting a distant star. Then they proclaim that life likely exists on this planet! This conclusion is drawn from the presupposed model of how life could form by chance, which is based on the evolutionary model of life arising on Earth. Remember this is a model and not actual scientific fact as you are led to believe. Now, if you examine Hawking's statements closely you will see his underlying philosophy behind the facts. Even if other planets exist orbiting other suns; does that make life on Earth any less unique? I think not. The remarkable, probability defying combination of physical, chemical and biological factors, any of which being altered would make life on Earth impossible ... remain unexplainable without an intelligent cause. In order to reject the need for God, Hawking needs you to believe there is nothing special about our Earth and its location in the universe. There is nothing special about the life here on Earth, either. Note also that we are considered self-centered bad guys for thinking we are special. Can you see how this parallels the modern sociological paradigm shift in America?

There are basically two philosophical models for the existence of the universe ... I call them philosophical because we do not have any actual proven or verified scientific model ... either the universe was created or came into being by itself. Accepting a Big Bang model rules out the ancient Hindu belief in an eternal or steady state universe, because the universe must have had a beginning. First, let's look at the Big Bang, including quotes form Hawking. Note he admits to his theory being an assumption.

"Now at first sight, all this evidence that the universe looks the same whichever direction we look in might seem to suggest there is something special about our place in the universe. In particular, it might seem that if we observe all other galaxies to be moving away from us, then we must be at the center of the universe. There is, however, an alternate explanation: the universe might look the same in every direction as seen from any other galaxy too. This, as we have seen, was Friedmann's second assumption. We have no scientific evidence for, or against, this assumption. We believe it only on grounds of modesty: it would be most remarkable if the universe looked the same in every direction around us, but not around other points in the universe!" Why the big bang: Stephen Hawking, A Brief History of Time, p. 42:

'However we are not able to make cosmological models without some admixture of ideology. In these earliest cosmologies, man placed himself in a commanding position at the centre of the universe. Since the time of Copernicus we have been steadily demoted to a medium sized planet going round a medium sized star on the outer edge of a fairly average galaxy, which is itself simply one of a local group of galaxies. Indeed we are now so democratic that we would not claim that our position in space is specially distinguished in any way. We shall, following Bondi(1960), call this assumption the Copernican principle'[emphasis added]. The Large Scale Structure of Space-Time, Stephen Hawking and George Ellis.

We see how these cosmology models are driven by Darwinian evolution in this quote: 'The Copernican revolution taught us that it was a mistake to assume, without sufficient reason, that we occupy a privileged position in the Universe. Darwin showed that, in terms of origin, we are not privileged above other species. Our position around an ordinary star in an ordinary galaxy in an ordinary supercluster [the local group of galaxies] continues to look less and less special. The idea that we are not located in a special spatial location has been crucial in cosmology, leading directly to the [big bang theory]. In astronomy the Copernican principle works because, of all the places for intelligent observers to be, there are by definition only a few special places and many nonspecial places, so you are likely to be in a nonspecial place' J. Richard Gott, III, "Implications of the Copernican Principle for our Future Prospects," Nature 363:315-319, 1993. So just how believable is the Big Bang? You probably thought it was believable because it was based on our most advanced scientific data ... but it is based upon an assumed model and conclusions drawn from a limited amount of observational data. In a nutshell you are asked to believe.... that nothing produced something. It appears to me more reasonable to believe the old adage "from nothing, nothing comes." How believable is evolution? Something that is believable can be shown to be logically true based on experience and observation. How believable is creation? My next article will look at both creation and evolution in terms of three factors: Logic, Historical Fact, and Scientific Fact.

Creation Worldviews Part 4. Biblical Creationism by Larry Kisner, M.S. Physics

Biblical Creationism

The basic tenants of Creation Science are summarized as follows:

The Bible reveals God’s creation; the Genesis account is true
Research reveals evidence for a young earth
Evidence claiming that evolution is a fact can be refuted

Creation scientists are not ashamed to make the bold proclamation that God is the Creator of all things. First of all, God has made Himself know through His creation. All you have to do is look up into the vast heavens and see all the stars, or look at the beauty of all the plants and animals on the earth, and you will see the handiwork of God.

For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him. Col 1:16

Creation scientists believe God’s Word is true; that He created everything in 6 days, as stated in Ex 20:11, that we are a special creation apart from the animals, created in God’s image, that man sinned and brought the curse of death upon all men, that God sent a great flood to destroy the world, but Noah and his wife and his sons and their wives were spared. Therefore we should see evidence a Noah’s flood, and we do. We should see genetic evidence that we are all descended from the sons of Noah, and we do in DNA studies. We will explore these things and much more in subsequent blogs.

We are held accountable for our beliefs. The Bible says in Romans 1 that we are without excuse for not believing in our Creator God.

Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, Rom 1:19-22

By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses. Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.
Ps 33:6-9

Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. Heb 11:3

Why is it important to believe in Biblical Creationism? If we adopt a comprised worldview and accept evolution, we must say that the Bible is not really God’s Word , but that the Genesis account of creation is just an allegory written to ignorant men long ago who couldn’t understand the science we know today. The Book of Genesis not only tells us about creation, but about sin, death, marriage, worship, love, and many more important doctrines of the faith. If we deny creation, which is the foundation for all other doctrines, then how can we defend all the rest of the Bible? Ultimately, how do we defend the teachings of Our Lord Jesus Christ, who affirmed the Genesis account of creation? The answer is, we can’t.

Creation Worldviews Part 3. Gap Theory by Larry Kisner, M.S. Physics

The Gap Theory

The gap theory is an attempt by Christian theologians to reconcile the time scale of world history found in Genesis with the popular belief that geologists provide "undeniable" evidence that the world is exceedingly old. The gap theory is described as follows:

“In the far distant dateless past, God created a perfect heaven and perfect earth. Satan was ruler of the earth, which was peopled by a race of "men" without any souls. Satan, rebelled by desiring to become like God. Because of Satan's fall, sin entered the universe and brought on the earth God's judgment in the form of a flood. All the plant, animal, and human fossils upon the earth today date from this "Lucifer's flood" and do not bear any relationship with the plants, animals, and fossils living upon the earth today. Some versions of the gap theory state that the fossil record (geologic column) formed over millions of years, then God destroyed the earth with a catastrophe that left it "without form and void.“ This all happened between Gen 1:1-1:2.

Some of the inconsistencies in the gap theory are as follows:

God says He created everything in 6 days and that it was good. No gap is mentioned in the Bible.

The gap theory puts sin, death, and disease before the fall of man. The Bible says that sin, death, and disease are the result of the fall of Adam.
The gap theory accepts the geologic column with the long ages of earth, extinction of the dinosaurs, etc. A literal interpretation of creation in the Bible is inconsistent with a literal interpretation of the geologic column.

The gap theory replaces Noah’s flood with a “satanic” catastrophe. Some even deny Noah’s flood was global for fear of ridicule by geologists who believe in a global flood on Mars but not on Earth!

Gap theory proponents say Gen 3:3 and Rom 5:12 refers to spiritual death, but this
Contradicts Gen 3:22-23 and 1 Cor 15. In placing on man the curse of physical death, God provided a way to redeem man through the person of His Son Jesus Christ.

Creation Worldviews Part 2. Theistic Evolution and Progressive Creation by Larry Kisner, M.S., Physics

Theistic Evolution/Progressive Creation

Those who embrace Theistic Evolution or Progressive Creationism accept the following evolutionary timescale of creation:

About 16 billion years ago the universe came into being out of a big bang. Then, about 4.billion years ago the earth evolved. About 3.5 billion years ago life evolved on earth. Finally, humans evolved from ape-like creatures 1-2 billion years ago.

Basically, the Theistic Evolution worldview is based on the acceptance of the current big bang theory and resultant stellar evolution of galaxies and planets, then biological evolution. In other words the big bang was initiated by God and then everything was left to natural processes. In terms of interpreting the scientific data, evolutionists and theistic evolutionists believe the current theories set forth by the evolution model. Therefore the Theistic Evolution worldview is a compromise because the Bible cannot be taken as the literal word of God. The creation days must be accepted as long periods of time.

Progressive Creationism also accepts the evolutionary time scale, big bang, stellar evolution, life on earth evolving up to pre-adamic apemen. The progressive creationist professes to believe in God, and believe in Jesus Christ as Savior; however, when it comes to science they accept the current evolutionary theory. Thus they deny the literal Bible account of creation, saying the stars and sun evolved out of the big bang, so the earth started out as a fiery mass, not as water and land, the stars and sun must have been created before the earth, and the birds could not have been created before the reptiles because the birds supposedly evolved from bird ancestors. They also deny the literal six days of creation and take each day as billions of years to accommodate the supposed evolutionary time scale.

Thus Progressive Creationism, in an attempt to appease the scientific community, denies what God clearly says in Genesis 1-11 and Exodus 20:11, and what Jesus affirmed in the New Testament about creation. Do you want to put your faith in the Bible, which is unchanging, or in the latest theories of science that continually change.

AzOSA President Joseph Kezele has received an invitation to go Latvia in September and to the Ukraine in late September to teach Creation Evangelism in churches and in universities there. In addition, he would also be teaching the same material in Smolensk, Russia, as part of a mission team, immediately following the time in the Ukraine. Since 1995 he has made a total of 6 trips to Russia and additional trips to Armenia (twice), Bosnia, Lithuania, Latvia and Mexico (twice) for the express purpose of teaching Creation Science Evangelism. This total does not include medical or standard evangelical mission trips. Altogether these add up to 21 foreign mission trips, all paid for out of his own pocket.

Grand total cost for this trip is approximately $5,000, but there are still several variables not yet set. This trip relates directly to AzOSA Objective #1 "To promote Creation Science in churches, in schools, and in our culture in general." but not in this country. Resources and people available to conduct this type of ministry are scant in eastern Europe; Objective #2 "To relate the Bible of the Christian faith to the sciences and disciplines in the educational world and in industry" (trip applies directly to the educational world in universities and possibly high schools but probably not industry); Objective #3 "To raise up and equip people to present Creation Science and the authority of God's Word." by presenting the material in Mike Riddle's Christian Teacher/Leader Training, which I am currently teaching in my Sunday school class at Black Mountain Baptist Church ; and Objective #4 "To promote research to study Creation Science and Biblical Creation." (although not addressed directly, research could develop as fruit from this trip could lead to that.

In all three countries there is an overwhelming need to overcome decades of atheistic indoctrination, to place before people the foundational understanding of creation so that they see the need for salvation, just as Paul did in Acts 17.

First, we will look at the basic questions of life. You can ignore these questions and just live your life the way you want, but you are traveling down a slippery slope toward destruction. Pr 14:12 There is a way which seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

Who am I? An animal with higher intelligence evolved from the primordial soup? Am I made in the image and likeness of God? Am I fearfully and wonderfully made, or just a cosmic accident? Do you believe Gen 1:27, Ps 139:14 or your Biology teacher?
Why am I here? Does my existence have a purpose? Is there really a God and he loves me? Can I trust in the Bible verses John 3:16, Romans 5:8, Titus 3:4-7?
What is going to happen to me when I die? Is this all there is: struggle, suffering, maybe a few happy days, then you die? Is there any way I can know how to go to heaven? Do I need to believe in Jesus to be saved? Can I believe the Bible’s answer? Rom 3:23, Rom 6:23, John 3:3, John 14:6, 1 John 5:13

You basically have two worldview choices: creation or evolution. However many people try to mix these worldviews, but we shall see that these mixed worldviews are all compromises. The Bible says God formed man out of the dust of the earth; evolution says we evolved from apes. How can you believe in God and evolution at the same time? As we shall see, you must twist the Bible interpretation of days, add gaps, or have ape-creatures before Adam was created. Let's look at some creation worldviews. First Intelligent design:

Intelligent Design Points to Creation but not the Bible
Intelligent Design avoids bringing God or the Bible into consideration. Many intelligent design proponents do not believe in God. Most intelligent design proponents believe in some type of directed evolution.

The arguments for intelligent design are very compelling, for example the irreducible complexity of a bacterial flagellant. The complex cells could not have evolved by random chance; they must have been designed.
Scientists have trained multitudes of telescopes toward the heavens searching for signs of extraterrestrial life. If they receive a signal with a little information, for example a set of numbers in a geometric progression, 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21 it would prove an intelligent being sent the message.

Meanwhile, in the genetics lab, scientists find an intelligent, non-random, reproducible code in our DNA and conclude there is no intelligent design in life and fight to keep this information out of the classroom.

I attended an Intelligent Design conference at Arizona State University and at the end of the conference a student asked, “Is the Intelligent Designer the God of the Bible?” The professor said, “Oh No, we do not want to offend anyone by bringing religion into the discussion.” So we see this is a compromised worldview. We must lead people to God or all this scientific discovery will be meaningless. We can however use a lot of information from Intelligent Design to refute evolution before we present the case for creation.

The Creation of the World

1In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

My View: God created the entire scope of the earth in six, 24 hour literal days.

Why:

• Supernatural God.

UNDERSTANDING THE USE OF THE WORD DAY

There are three different translations of the Hebrew word day:

• A 12 hour period of light: Gn. 1:5, 14, 16, 18.
• A 24 hour period. Gn. 1:5, 8, 13, 19, 23, 31.
• The entire creative week. Gn. 2:4.

Note: There is nothing contextually to give the impression of a day is equal to millions of years.

Note: However long the “days” were, they were all the same length contextually, which translates to the reader to take as literal.

Note: The longest time period for a “day” in the text and context of the creation is 6 literal days.

SCRIPTURE DOES USE THE WORD “YOM” TO REFER TO A MUCH LONGER THAN 24 HOUR DAY.

Psalm 90:4. 4For a thousand years in your sight

are but as yesterday when it is past,

or as a watch in the night.

2 Peter 3:8. 8But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

These verses contextually portray to us the power and patience of God, not an amount of time He requires to do a day’s work.

The most common use of the word “yom” is a 24 hour period of time.

MOSES CHOSE TO BRACKET EACH PERIOD OF TIME WITH A REFERENCE TO MORNING AND EVENING.

Scripture continued through revelation to maintain a 6, 24 hour literal creation:

Exodus 20:11. 11For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Exodus 31:17. 17 It is a sign forever between me and the people of Israel that(B) in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and(C) on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.'"

THE CONTINUED REVELATION OF SCRIPTURE MAINTAINS THAT GOD’S POWER WAS CERTAINLY POTENT ENOUGH TO CREATE ALL THAT HAD BEEN CREATED IN SIX TWENTY-FOUR HOUR DAYS!!!

Creation was spoken by God:

6By(A) the word of the LORD the heavens were made,

and by(B) the breath of his mouth all(C) their host.

7He gathers the waters of the sea as(D) a heap;

he(E) puts the deeps in storehouses.

8Let all the earth fear the LORD;

let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him!

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Christian scholarship (study, learning) is not just necessary for church leaders, but to every Christian. As Christians we have a mandate to have ready answers (2 Peter 3:15), to be discerning (1 Thessalonians 5:21-22), teach all nations (Matthew 28:19-20) and be doers of the Word (James 1:22).

If we are going to be effective in proclaiming the Gospel to a nation that has abandoned biblical authority, we must study and rightly know how to handle the Scriptures. There are at least three reasons Christian scholarship is necessary in our endeavors to proclaim the Gospel.

First, it is necessary for evangelism. Without knowledge how can someone believe? A very little knowledge is often sufficient for someone to believe, but some knowledge must be there. If someone is to trust Christ, they must know something about Him. God has provided two sources of knowledge: His Word and His creation (Romans 1:19-20). A “simple faith” is not enough for evangelism. Advocates of a “simple faith” miss the opportunity to build believers into effective Christians. Christian scholarship is important in order that we can tell the whole story of Jesus - Creator and Savior (rightfully handling the Word of God).

Second, it is necessary for a defense of the faith (apologetics). There are people in the church that teach that no defense of the faith is necessary. Christianity that avoids defending the faith is not the Christianity of the New Testament. The writings of Paul are full of argument in defense of the faith. The words of Jesus are full of argument in defense of the truth. Many of the parables of Jesus are argumentative in character. The Bible mandates all Christians to know how to defend their faith (1 Peter 3:15, Jude 3, Col 4:5-6, Titus 1:9). It is ineffective to proclaim a Gospel that people cannot hold to be true. We are living in a time of great conflict against the authority of God’s Word. It is not easy to defend the faith against the forceful attacks from proponents of evolution and the secular media. Therefore, knowledge of the truth is necessary (study to show thyself approved).

Third, it is necessary for building up the church. Paul, the great evangelist, thrived in preaching the Gospel in places where it not been heard. Yet his writings are full of edification and building up those who had already been won. There is a great need in the church today to return to solid instruction. We need teachers whose instruction goes beyond teaching current events and social issues and focuses on Christian doctrine (A workman that needs not be ashamed).

For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. (Hebrews 5:12)

Released in 2010, Alleged is an award-winning movie about the “Scopes Monkey Trial” of 1925 in Dayton, TN. Supported by a company of able though less known actors, Brian Dennehy and Senator Fred Thompson play the flamboyant opposing lawyers, Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan, respectively.

In the lingering shadow of the 1923 recession, Dayton was suffering especially because the local coal mine had closed. Some local leaders were looking for ways to put the town on the map again, so they promoted a controversial trial that would bring people from afar and would make the Butler Act unpopular. Tennessee’s Butler Act stated in general that it was illegal to teach in the public schools the idea that mankind came from primates and not from the direct creation of God.

John Scopes was talked into confessing that he had taught evolution in a biology class as a substitute teacher even though he was just the coach. The community leaders cooked up the scheme to have a court case that would create a lot of publicity for the town. Nationally famous people were contacted to bring more notoriety to the case. Clarence Darrow and the ACLU were brought into the act and did most of the planning.

The love story angle of the plot involved a young struggling local reporter who was tempted to support the evolution side of the controversy in order to get attention and perhaps a job with the Baltimore Sun. Rose, his fiancée and stenographer, was a traditional person who preferred sticking to Biblical principles.  H. L. Mencken, the renowned writer from the Baltimore Sun and avowed atheist, came to town to support the defense side of the trial, to influence the crowds, and to popularize evolution not only in Dayton but across the country. Several other atheist evolutionists came to Dayton also to popularize the theory of human evolution.

It was interesting to watch the flip flop in the legal strategy. Clarence Darrow, a devoted reader of Huxley (Darwin’s bulldog) and Nietzsche (of “God is Dead” fame), was brought in to defend John Scopes.  In the end, Darrow declared his client to be guilty so that an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court would be possible. Such an appeal would bring more nationwide notoriety to the issue. Darrow’s whole purpose was to popularize evolution.

A sub-theme of Alleged involves Rose’s half sister, Abigail, who was black and in a home for mentally or physically handicapped children. Alleged exposes the now rarely remembered practice of sterilization of the handicapped that involved 60,000 Americans from the late 20s to the late 30s.  Sterilization of the handicapped was an attempt to improve the human race by eliminating "defectives" from the gene pool.  Imposed in many states, sterilization laws were formally approved by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1927 in the case of Buck v. Bell. At the Nuremberg trials after World War II, Nazi doctors explicitly cited Justice Holmes's opinion in Buck v. Bell in defense of their eugenics program.

According to the makers of Alleged, its presentation more accurately portrays the facts of the Scopes trial than did the famous 1960 move, Inherit the Wind.  Even so, Alleged adds fictional side story elements to showcase the controversies about the struggles for control of public education content and the eugenics movement that found “scientific” support in Darwinian evolution theory.

Thought-provoking and entertaining, Alleged counters the distortions of Inherit the Wind yet stands on its own merits to stimulate thinking about the interplay of historical facts, scientific knowledge, and influential propaganda that continues to this day.

SPLICE Movie Review

Many years ago AzOSA had a presentation on how evolution was portrayed in Hollywood movies.  Recently the movie 'Splice' depicts the laboratory creation of Dren, who is a composite of human and various types of animals.  At first glance one would say 'this is not about evolution, as Dren is created'.  But Dren was not the larva like creature suitable for producing biochemical cocktails the scientists expected.   While initially  having the appearance of a grub, she went through several metamorphoses, finally becoming something resembling an angel, and then a fallen angel.  One might draw comparisons between this and Goldschmidt's "hopeful monster" theory of evolution.   However, a significant idea is expressed when one of the scientists explains how Dren came to have so many amazing attributes: It was the expression of the "junk DNA" which supposedly compromises much of our genetic makeup.

Science fiction occasionally uses the theme where in man either becomes God on an individual basis, as in '2001 A Space Odyssey', or becomes God collectively as in  Arthur C.Clark's   'Childhood's End'.    While Dren never becomes deity, her transformation into someone resembling our concept of Lucifer, with goat like legs, barbed tail, wings and perverse trans-gender sexuality, might create a subconscious linkage to the "god of this world".

While Evolution is for the most part presented as a scientific theory, it has long had an association with occult or 'New Age' thinking.  Take the example of the Nazi expectation of a human 'super race' coming from the Aryan race.  Dr. Henry Morris, in his book 'The Long War Against God', postulates that a notion of evolution may have led to Satan's rebellion and documents some of the connections of evolution with ancient spirituality.  Through fantasy and science fiction there is a continuous exploration of the related themes of evolution and just how man might become God.  In Second Thessalonians 2:11 it is written "And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:"  A reasonable assumption as to just what "the lie" is is given in verse 4 concerning the Antichrist: "Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshiped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God."  The ultimate lie from creation, "and ye shall be as gods", is the notion that man can become God.

One more note: the movie takes the taboo expressed by the Greek Tragedy "Oedipus Rex" to an extreme, so we aren't recommending you watch it.

A Synopsis of Mike Riddle’s DVD “Dating Fossils and Rocks”.

Mike riddle divides this subject into 3 main parts.

1. Understanding how Carbon-14 works.

2. Understanding how scientists date rocks and the age of the earth.

3. Scientific evidences that support the Biblical account of a young earth.

Part 1. Atoms are composed of three basic parts, protons, neutrons and electrons.

The number of protons determines the type of element. For example Carbon has 6 protons, 6 neutrons and 6 electrons. Nitrogen has 7 protons, 7 neutrons and 7 electrons.

If a cosmic ray collides with a nitrogen atom and blasts off one proton, it becomes an unstable Carbon-14 atom. It now only has 6 protons, and thus becomes a carbon atom with 7 neutrons and 7 electrons. In other words, it is no longer balanced with the protons and neutrons. It wants to grab another proton from somewhere and become stable as a Nitrogen atom again. This is called Carbon-14 decay – going back into Nitrogen. If an animal dies, it no longer takes in CO-2 in the food it ate, which included both C-12 and C-14. Carbon-12 and Carbon 14 are normally in a ratio of 1 trillion to one as found in vegetation. The Carbon 14 slowly grabs another proton to get back to the stable Nitrogen 14 stable atom. It has been measured that in 5730 years, half of the Carbon-14 will change back to Nitrogen 14, so the ratio of Carbon 14 becomes less so that then there is only one Carbon-14 to 2 trillion atoms of C-12. In another 5730 years, there would be only one atom of C-14 to 4 trillion atoms of C-12. In about ten half life cycles, there would be very little C-14 to measure in comparison to the C-12.

As a result of this decay rate back to N-14, one would not expect to find measurable C-14 in anything older than 60,000 to 100,000 years old.

There is an assumption that the amounts of C-14 in relation the C-12 in the atmosphere have reached an equilibrium. It was estimated that it would take 30,000 years for them to be in equilibrium. They are not in equilibrium now.

There are three other assumptions which cast doubt upon the validity of C-14 dating.

a. Cosmic ray penetration affects the amount of C-14. we don’t know if this has been constant.

b. The strength of the earth’s magnetic field has an effect upon the production rate of C-14.

c. The Genesis Flood and its effect upon the atmosphere’s density has not been constant. It is likely that less C-14 was produced before the flood, causing the ratio of

C-14 to C-12 to be much less, therefore giving the impression of much greater ages with the present measuring systems.

Part 2. Radioisotope dating methods for dating rocks and the age of the earth have many problems. This is how it is supposed to work: Uranium decays eventually into the daughter element Lead, Potassium (the parent) decays into the daughter Argon, etc. There are four questionable basic assumptions

a. Is the amount of the daughter element known at the start?

b. Was there no contamination of independent daughter element along the way.

c. Was the sample in a closed environment.

d. Has the decay rate been constant.

There are many examples of different ages being given for the same rock by the same test and there is great variation of dates given for the same rock by a different types of tests. Basalt lava flows at the top of the Grand Canyon have been measured as being older than lava flows at the bottom of the Grand Canyon . Dr John Morris PHD in Geologic Engineering has said: “When the rock is dated by more than one method, it will often yield different ‘ages.’ And when the rock is dated more than one time by the same method, it will often give different results.” Another quote from him goes like this: “When we know the time of the formation of a rock from a lava flow, the radiometric dating is never right. How can we believe the radiometric dating of the rocks when we do not know of their formation time?” (not an exact quote)

Part 3. Scientific evidences that support the biblical account of a young earth.

a. Conflicts in C-14 dating of wood found in lava flows which are radioisotope dated.

b. Not enough Helium in the atmosphere to support long ages of the earth.

c. There is still too much Helium left in granite rocks to support long ages.

d. The RATE (Radioisotope and the Age of the Earth) group report in Nov. 2005

e. More evidences of a young earth.

(1) Too little Helium in earth’s atmosphere.

(2) Nuclear decay rates.

(3) Amount of Sodium in the oceans.

(4) Too little erosion of the continents for long ages.

(5) Too little sediment in the oceans.

(6) Decay of the earth’s magnetic field is too fast for long ages.

(7) Carbon-14 ratio in the atmosphere and in coal deposits all over the earth

(8) Radiohalos for Polonium in granite.

(9) Population statistics.

(10) Recession of the Moon

(11) Many more evidences for a young earth.

f. Many PHD Scientists believe in a young earth

Conclusion: Five facts.

1. The earth has not been scientifically proven to be billions of years old.

2. The Bible teaches a literal 6 day creation.

3. Many Scientists believe in a literal 6-day creation about 6000 years ago.

4. New evidence from nuclear decay supports a young earth model.

5. There are many scientific evidences for a young earth. Almost all of the founders of the early fields of science were Bible believing young earth creationists such as: Johannes Kepler (discoverer of the laws of planetary motion), Blaise Pascal (great mathematician), Robert Boyle (founder of modern Chemistry) Neils Steno (founder of Geology), Carolus Linnaeus (classifier of all things living), John Dalton (founder of modern Atomic Theory), Michael Faraday (giant of electrical research), Asa Gray (Botanist), James Prescott Joule (Joule’s Law), Gregor Mendel (pioneer in Genetics), Lord Kelvin (Physicist of Thermodynamics), James Clerk Maxwell, (father of modern Physics), Georges Lemaitre (expanding Universe), George Washington Carver (Pioneer in Chemurgy).

Ps 118:8 It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.

What is Creation Science?
by Henry M. Morris and Gary E. Parker, Master Books, Revised 1997, 331 pp.

This book stands as a benchmark reference presenting the case for Creation Science.  Whereas the media continually touts the evolutionist position that only evolution is science and creationism is purely religious, the late Dr. Morris, highly regarded as the most respected creation scientist and author, and Dr. Gary Parker, a noted biologist, clearly and convincingly present scientific evidence for Creation Science in their book.

Dr. Morris gives evidence for the "vanishing case for evolution science", citing the facts that there is no fossil record of transitional forms, no new species evolving, no recapitulation, etc.  He uses quotes from the evolutionists own words pointing to the lack of real evidence for macroevolution. Dr. Parker provides an in-depth look at the evidence from the study of paleontology, biology, and genetics to show the creation model superior to the evolution model in explaining the fossil record and the observed complexity of living organisms.

Dr. Morris examines the laws of physics, namely the first and second laws of thermodynamics, and shows the creation model validates these laws whereas the evolution model violates these laws.  He looks at astronomical evidence pointing to the origin of the universe as an act of creation rather than a big bang, and looks at the geological evidence which points to a recent, universal flood as described in the Bible, rather than billions of years of uniformitarianism.

Appendix A provides answers to questions and criticisms of Creation Science, and addresses the teaching of Creation Science and Evolution in the classroom.  This is a war of worldviews, and the proponents of evolution will say anything to try and discredit anyone who favors a balanced treatment of both view in our schools and universities.  This book contains over 200 cited references, and is highly recommended as a must read for anyone desiring to learn the truth about Creation Science.

Tornado in a Junkyard

Mr. Perloff’s book is written in an informative yet easy to understand style.  He provides many convincing arguments that reveal that there are no solid evidences that exist for macroevolution -- the process of change of living organisms from simple one-celled creatures into more complex animals including man.

The book examines the growing body of scientific evidence that invalidates Darwin 's theory of evolution. Among the many issues he covers are: why the lack of transitional forms in the fossil record fails to give credibility to Darwin’s theory, the impossibility of mutations serving as evolutionary building blocks, the lack of evidence for "ape-men" and the mathematic impossibility of life beginning by itself.

The book exposes the fraud of zoologist Ernst Haeckel that is still reference in some textbooks claiming to show pig, calf, rabbit, and human embryos are indistinguishable in their early stages. For students of history, this book gives a blow-by-blow comparison of the actual Scopes monkey trial with the “Inherit the Wind” movie that purposely portrayed creationists as buffoons and evolutionists as rational scientists. This book would be an excellent resource for anyone interested in creation, providing a comprehensive, concise compilation of many of the evidences against evolution, and providing a very strong case for God’s creation.

The Truth About Human Origins
by Brad Hurrub and Bert Thompson, Apologetics Press, 2003, 517 pages

This is an excellent technical book on the subject of Human Origins and would be a valuable resource for all those interested in a deeper understanding of the Creation/Evolution controversy. The first two chapters investigate the Origin of Mankind by examining in depth the fossil record, comparing the alleged evolutionary time line of man with the actual “record of the rocks”, that is, the observed fossil data. Chapter 3 examines the molecular evidence for human origins, including a detailed discussion of mitochondrial Eve and exposes the serious errors in the mitochondrial DNA data presented in the literature. The problem of the simultaneous chance evolution of gender and sexual reproduction is addressed in Chapter 4. A strong case for intelligent design rather than mere chance evolution is presented in this book. The evolutionary theories of the origin of speech and language communication is next examined and found to be a completely human trait.

Up to this point, most of the material presented has been covered in the literature, although this book goes into more detail than most. However, in the last three chapters the authors Dr. Brad Hurrub, a neurobiologist, and Dr. Bert Thompson, a microbiologist, present a fresh, new insight into the origin of the human brain, the evolution of human consciousness, and the nature of human blood types. Scientists can now probe deep into the human brain and record the activity of a single neuron, but can only speculate as to the role of this neural activity in producing our memories, emotions, or explain how we can be aware that we are aware of being alive. The “evolution” of the theories of the origin of human consciousness is presented in comprehensive detail.

Why is all this important? If humans are just animals, evolved over millions of years by random chance, then there is no real purpose of meaning of life. However, if God uniquely created us with the ability to comprehend our existence, He must have a purpose for creating us. God’s Word makes clear this purpose was to worship Him.

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God

Getting the Facts Straight – A viewer’s Guide to PBS’s “Evolution” TV Series

The PBS TV Series “Evolution” claimed in several places to be about science and not about religion, but in several of the 7 sections it brought in religion in a negative connotation . Much data and many beautiful nature scenes were interspersed, none of which gives scientific proof of the origin of life by purely natural means. There were many distortions of scientific and historical facts. There were many shallow and lopsided coverages of scientific controversies. The author of this book takes on each of the 7 episodes in great detail

The producers said that one goal was to show that evolution was important to almost every aspect of life. In the opinion of this reviewer, evolution had nothing to do with the science of putting a man on the moon or of computer development, or of building fine cars, etc. Evolution is religion pure and simple, Science does very well without it. A statement is made that “all known scientific evidence supports evolution”. Textbooks and the media religiously avoid mentioning any of the many facts which refute evolution. This book reveals many of them.

In the Beginning Was Information by Werner Gitt

Dr. Gitt received his Ph. D., graduating (summa cum laude) from the Technical University at Aachen, Germany . He is now Director and Professor at the German Federal Institute of Physics and Technology. He has lectured on Information and technology at numerous Universities and technical forums. He has written numerous scientific papers on information science, mathematics and control engineering.

In the first chapter he lays out logically and scientifically the Laws of Nature and how they have been developed in respect to reality. He shows how paradigms shift as new information on a subject is discovered, but also shows the persistence of paradigms which have been overthrown as the laws of nature become more clearly defined. He also discusses the classification of Natural Laws.

In the next section the author discusses whether information is material or mental. And proves that information must be mental and emanate from a Mind but is recorded on matter such as computer discs, paper, or DNA. He uses an illustration that if a message is written on a blackboard, information has been passed from a Mind to whoever receives it. If the Information is erased and the chalk dust saved, the blackboard and the chalk dust still weigh the same, showing that information is non-material, that the information is gone.

He then shows five levels of information: Statistics (the code characters used), Syntax (the recognizable order of the code), Semantics (recognizable or agreed upon meaning of the code), Pragmatics (the desired action expressed to the recipient), and Apobetics (the why or purpose of the information).

The next sections show the origin of information in living things. It cannot be from the material or the atoms. It must originate from outside of the matter, namely from God. In John 1 it says: ”In Him was life, and He is the light which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.” Heb 11:3 says: “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the Word of God, so that things which are seen are made of things which do not appear.”

I like the one phrase “every piece of information is intentional”. An example is given of the DNA molecule and the messenger RNA. The RNA receives the info and takes it to the various “engines” in a living system to accomplish the purpose of the designer of the DNA and its corresponding systems.

The appendices give further examples of how information plays out in a few living organisms.

This very readable book is easily understood by those who are in high-school and older. It covers a wide range of 50 questions, and answers them individually in length from 1 to 5 pages. Quite a few interesting topics not widely discussed are addressed. There are 10 very useful tables and 15 excellent illustrations, all in black and white. In many questions the evolutionist point of view is presented along with the data (which both evolutionists and creationists agree upon) that calls it into question. Then the creation explanation that makes sense of the data in light of the Biblical time frame for creation and the Flood of Noah is presented. This a good general resource to read straight through or to use to look up individual questions and answers, which are listed in the table of contents.

J. M. Kezele, M.D.

The Language of God by Francis Collins. Text, 283 pages. List price, $26.00.
The main thesis of this book is that you can be a credible scientist and a Christian by believing in theistic evolution.

Dr. Collins has very impressive academic credentials with his doctoral level studies in Physical Chemistry, and his M.D. and Ph.D. in Medical Genetics. He also has marvelous accomplishments as a physician and as head of the Human Genome Project, which successfully mapped the complete human DNA sequence.

I find portions of the main text to be an excellent resource for the layman regarding information about the human genome, and especially the appendix for explaining for the layman the science of embryonic and adult stem cell research, cloning, somatic cell nuclear transplantation and preimplantation genetic diagnosis.

However in the discussion of the moral aspects of some of these areas he introduces relativism allowing for compromise in decision making. In particular, regarding embryonic stem cells, he uses the situation of the formation of identical twins to invoke confusion about when the embryo acquires a soul. To me, this side steps the real issue, which is that from the moment of the union of the egg and the sperm, the zygote (embryo) has the full complement of DNA, its genetic material, and is fully human. No further discussion is needed. He also ignores the real and very significant advances made in treating actual patients with adult stem cell line research technology successfully treating more than 60 different types of problems.

His well documented, profound and far reaching accomplishments in the area of observational science should not be confused with his musings in the area of origins science. First of all, multiple times throughout the book he promotes the false argument that the conflict is between science and faith in God. Dr. Collins lists various presuppositions, but accepts the big bang as if it was observed fact, and not a presupposition. He ignores the open letter to the scientific community, which can be easily found on the internet, and which is now signed by 405 secular astronomers, scientists, engineers and independent researchers who declare the big bang to be dead.

Dr. Collins closely adheres to the assumptions and misrepresentations of Hugh Ross. For example, he dismisses Genesis as history in one brief sentence on page 83: Unquestionably the language is poetic. This is compounded on page 207, where he invokes allegory again regarding Adam and Eve. He writes Some biblical literalists insist that the wives of Cain and Seth must have been their own sisters, but that is both in serious conflict with subsequent prohibitions against incest, and incompatible with a straightforward reading of the text.

Dr. Collins of all people would know that initially the genome was free of the accumulated burden of mutations, except for his presupposition that Adam and Eve were the continuation of some pre-Adamic race, necessitated by his belief in evolution. According to him, Adam and Eve allegorically represent pre-human beings transformed into human beings at some point in the distant past by an act of God instilling into them human characteristics such as a soul, the Moral Law and the ability to appreciate beauty. Dr. Collins sidesteps the incongruity between death preceding sin, which evolution requires, and death following sin, which Scripture quite clearly states is the case in Romans 6:23: The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. When Scripture refers to Jesus as the last Adam, is Christ then also to be taken allegorically?

Returning to the subsequent ban on marrying very close relatives, it was subsequent, decreed by God in Moses time, in recognition of the accumulation of mutations in the genome, which began after the literal Adam and Eve. This demonstrates application of real science by God himself. Dr. Collins assertion, that Genesis 5:4b Adam had other sons and daughters. read in a straightforward manner, does not explain the source of Cains and Seths wives, is incomprehensible to me.

Unfortunately, the book is filled with flaws in interpretation of observed facts, due to the presupposition of evolution. But most disappointing to me as a physician are the repetitions of disproved evolutionary canards regarding human anatomy. Research has confirmed that indeed the design of the retina is ideal, the spine is well designed for optimum flexibility and weight loading, and that the appendix does have extremely important functions as part of the immune system in the earlier years of life.

Dr. Collins characterizing young earth creationists as extremists by using the label ultraliteralists does him no credit and should give him pause to rethink his interpretation of Scripture, for one day we all will have to stand before the Lord and account for our treatment of His word.

Persuaded by the evidence is an inspiring collection of life-changing accounts of real scientists discovering the fact that science does not support evolution as defined by orthodox evolutionists (molecules to man by purely natural forces). Seeking the truth is what science is really about. Contrary to the popularly espoused view that evolution is science and creationism or ID is religion, evolution is not empirically verified science but rather is the hypothetical conjecture that life arose by purposeless, random naturalistic processes. Real science is objective, physical, and inductive, with measured evidence to support the theory. Belief in evolution, taken to its ultimate logical conclusion, is there can be no free will and no ultimate purpose in life. When you die, as Cornell Professor William Provine says, you are absolutely dead forever. We are born, we die, and that’s it.
One willing to objectively look at the evidence for macroevolution will find none. This scientific evidence logically supports the existence of design and intelligence, and even points to a Creator.
The format of Persuaded by the Evidence provides a refreshing, enjoyable reading experience as each chapter presents a personal account of how the author’s life was changed as they discovered the Creator God, the God of the Bible.
One author tried to win a prize by simply finding an example of physically verifiable evidence, or even a mathematical model sufficient to elevate the hypothesis of macroevolution to the level of a scientific theory. Another found arguments from probability and experimental verification that chemical evolution does not happen without intelligent guidance. Another saw the beauty, order, complexity, and sophisticated engineering design in the universe and in living organisms. Others discovered the absence of transitional forms in the fossil record, the inability to explain the origin of language, the fact that new information cannot be added by random undirected mutations, that circular logic is used in radiometric dating, and the inability of evolution to provide an answer to the problem of morality. These discoveries persuaded them to turn to creation and God for explanations.

I highly recommend this book for anyone seeking the goal of science, the truth.
